Commissioning Specialist (Former Employee) – Various – January 15, 2020
There are many jobs within GE Power that can be in an office, but my job was constantly away from home. Being single, it was OK, but after a while, the large amount of time away from home can be difficult.
Great place to work. Friendly coworkers and great pay. Poor management. Sad to see the company go. GE was sold and the plant moved to Canada. The hardest part of working for GE was poor job security. Been laid off many times.
GE used to be a great company, but that was the case in the past

GE has recently made bad choices in terms of acquisitions and management. The company no longer does engineering. Rather, it is an industrial portfolio manager. This orientation makes it no longer the top choice for highly skilled engineers
Excellent working environment Everyday is different Management encourage self learning and career progress Flexible hours and working form home possible if required Good training ground to understand and develop multi level and latest technologies
Competitive atmosphere is both fun and toxic, people fearful of layoffs, managers save themselves, smart people, too focused on shareholder value and not people, too much hierarchy, when times are good, it is an exciting place to be. Good pay.
Working for a major company, the competition will always be there. Overall it's a nice place to work. Some opportunities for contract and full employees. Some teams and their managers were nice, others not so welcoming. But that's with many places.
Due to overseas engineering collaboration early meeting with engineers time zone different was a fun part mostly two times a week, speaking with them and learn about culture. Always schedule was a big part to finish the project in timely matter and was challenging. Help field engineer any problem occurred due to fabrication or damage. Visit project site if engineering issue occurred and meet with customer if they any concern or need help during construction.
Joined GE via their take of Alstom Power Services. The people that GE retained were a knowledgeable, capable and dedicated team. Hard working but able to share a laugh at work and more especially at out of hours office organised events.
